Dynamic Resource Management using Operating System-Level Virtualization
نویسنده
چکیده
This thesis expands upon an existing system called Golondrina that performs autonomic workload management among a cluster of hardware nodes running operating system-level virtualization. Golondrina works by identifying localized resource stress situations and attempting to dissipate them by reallocating system resources and, if necessary, migrating or replicating virtual machines. It is predicted that, using Golondrina, efficiency of similar systems can be further improved by achieving greater resource utilization on the hardware nodes while maintaining resource availability for each virtual machine. The following topics are discussed: virtualization technologies and associated challenges relating to resource management, the architecture and design of Golondrina, intelligent resource reallocation based on predefined policies, and preliminary results demonstrating the effects of a memory resource management policy on the performance of a web application hosted in a virtual environment. This research makes a significant contribution to the study of virtualized data centres since currently no other system considers virtual machine replication and dynamic memory reallocation as an approach to workload management.

Carl Waldspurger began by explaining that hypervisors introduced a powerful extra level of indirection between hardware and software, which makes virtualization a successful strategy, but also introduces problems of complexity, performance isolation between workloads sharing the same hardware, and of the semantic gap between software running on a virtual machine and the host layer representing ...
متن کاملRecovering Host Overloading in Cloud using Virtual Machines
Virtualization provides an efficient solution to the objectives of the cloud computing paradigm by facilitating creation of Virtual Machines (VMs) over the underlying physical servers, leading to improved resource utilization and intellection. Virtualization proposes to create a virtual version of a device or a resource likely to virtualize a server, a storage space, operating system or even ne...
متن کاملEnergy Management for Hypervisor-Based Virtual Machines
Current approaches to power management are based on operating systems with full knowledge of and full control over the underlying hardware; the distributed nature of multi-layered virtual machine environments renders such approaches insufficient. In this paper, we present a novel framework for energy management in modular, multi-layered operating system structures. The framework provides a unif...
